Most acupuncturists who are working in the United States will follow FDA regulations when it comes to acupuncture needles. The use of acupuncture needles is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which classifies the acupuncture needle as a Class II medical device. Longevity acupuncture uses only disposable, sterilized, individually packaged needles. Additionally, the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists’ national board exam includes a Clean Needle Test.
The cleanliness of needles used for acupuncture are of utmost importance to practitioners. Traditionally, Chinese acupuncture techniques would see needles being re-used and stored in alcohol. This is not, however, enough to sterilize against some viruses, including Hepatitis C. It is important to ensure that your treatment only utilizes sterilized, single-use needles.
