Stress and Weight Gain

Stress is the body’s natural alarm system. For millions of years, it has served humans well in situations that required a fight or flight response. However, today’s stress is not the result of seeing a predator lying in wait in the bushes. Work and relationship issues are the primary causes of stress today, which put our mind and body in a constant state of pressure, resulting in unwanted weight gain.

Stress induces weight gain in several ways. When we are under stress, the fight or flight response is triggered in our bodies, leading to the release of cortisol, the stress hormone. When we have high cortisol in our system, we may crave sugar, fatty food, and our waistline suffers.

Stress also causes poor sleep. Sleep deprivation reduces leptin, the “hunger hormone” which suppresses hunger and appetite and encourages the body to expend energy. And lack of sleep makes you more likely to eat more of your overall calories at night, which can lead to weight gain.
