Miscarriage Prevention

Recurrent miscarriage, or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is the loss of two or more consecutive pregnancies before the end of the 20th week. There are many different factors that can cause miscarriages: genetic factors, anatomical factors, endocrine factors, immunological factors, clotting factors, environmental factors, and infections. If you have had two or more miscarriages, it is extremely  important to work with your doctor to find out the cause through diagnostic testing.  However, sometimes even a thorough and comprehensive evaluation can not provide an answer.  If you are one of the women who suffers from unexplained recurrent miscarriages, it is advisable to resort to acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, which has been practiced in China for thousands of years treating gynecological conditions and pregnancy.  Through the holistic approach, the energetic imbalance that is undetected from diagnostic testing often can be corrected with treatment.

How does it work?

At Longevity Acupuncture, we understand the anxiety and depression comes with recurrent pregnancy losses. Some women are living in such fear of losing the baby again that they cannot fully enjoy life during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Regular supportive acupuncture along with Chinese herbs, supplements and lifestyle counseling can help reduce the risk of miscarriage by:

  • Relaxing the body and mind; promoting healing; reducing emotional stress
  • Balancing hormones; strengthening body’s deficient areas, such as digestive system
  • Increasing the blood flow to the ovaries to nourish the developing follicles and create better egg quality and embryos
  • Increasing blood flow to the testicles to improve sperm quality. This is particularly important in couples undergoing ICSI.
  • Increasing blood flow to the uterus; building up the uterine lining
  • Reducing the inflammation in the uterus; supporting implantation
  • Nourishing the developing fetus by improving the blood flow to the placenta; preventing uterine contractions

What are the medical treatments for recurrent miscarriage?

Medical treatment for preventing future miscarriages depends on what is causing the recurrent miscarriages.

If you have:

Chromosomal abnormalities:

Women over age 35 are more likely to miscarry than younger women. That’s because older women are more likely to have eggs with chromosomal issues, and a higher risk of health conditions that can affect pregnancyYour doctor may recommend in vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic testing to improve your chances for a successful outcome.

Fibroids, uterine septum, retained pregnancy tissue or other uterine abnormalities:

Your doctor may recommend a minimally invasive procedure called a hysteroscopy to fix the structural abnormality or remove any retained tissue. A hysteroscopy can be performed vaginally (without surgical incisions) and does not require a hospital stay.

Cervical insufficiency:

Your doctor may recommend a surgery called transabdominal cervical cerclage. This procedure can provide additional support to your cervix as the fetus grows.

A thyroid condition, diabetes or high levels of the hormone prolactin:

An endocrinologist can help you develop a plan to get your hormone levels under control.

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome:

Taking a blood thinner and low-dose aspirin can improve your chances for a healthy pregnancy

Endometritis:

If you have an inflammatory condition like chronic endometritis, your doctor may recommend taking an antibiotic.

Kelly P ( 34 years old)

I tried to conceive for over 2 years.  After a miscarriage,  I went to see Dr. Vivian for acupuncture  treatment. Within 3 months, I was pregnant again and truly feel that a lot of credit goes to my acupuncture treatment.  Dr. Vivian was very emotionally supportive, positive, and so knowledgeable about the female reproductive system and the benefits acupuncture offers.  I will definitely go back to see her when I am ready for boby number 2!
