Traditional Chinese Medicine tells us that the winter months are the best time to rejuvenate our vital energy, or Qi, so that we can look and feel our best. However, consumer culture has something else to say about that. The average American spends between 40 and 50 hours per year preparing for the holiday season. Considering that a large portion of people wait until the last minute to shop for gifts and other holiday necessities—42% of consumers have just begun shopping this month—this figure is a bit overwhelming. That’s basically a full work week of gift buying over the course of one or two months on top of your regular routine. If you’ve taken on extra work during the season as so many do, you’re practically in over your head. Talk about stressful.
We also have to think about who does most of the shopping during the holidays. While women are more likely to start holiday shopping early, men tend to do more shopping online. That means that while women are fighting their way through the crowded mall for that perfect gift, their male counterparts are scrolling and clicking from the comfort of an armchair. Regardless of your sex, if you find that you are under a lot of stress this holiday season, try doing some of the following things to get some much needed relief.
If You Can’t Manage the Crowds, Shop Online
You don’t have to do all of your shopping at an actual store. If you think that you are too busy or stressed out to make it to the mall, spend a few minutes online. You can often find what you are looking for, sometimes for less than at the department store. Not only do you not have to brave the crowds, but also you get to save money in the process. This can help alleviate some of that financial stress.
Take Some Time to Treat Yourself
If you end up having to leave your home to find your gifts or shop for decorations, take some time to treat yourself every once in a while. Get a massage, relax with a hot bath, purchase your favorite holiday treat—whatever you do, make sure that you’re focusing on what you need to avoid anxiety. Don’t add to your stress by forgoing a break.
Book an Acupuncture Session
Another way to relieve anxiety and stress during the holidays is to try acupuncture. The stress that you feel during the holidays is due to the imbalance in your Qi. An acupuncture session will bring your body back to balance, increasing and improving the flow of qi and harmonizing Yin and Yang. This will leave you feeling refreshed ready to spread some holiday cheer!
